Solidarity Day 2024: justice is a verb

To our Palestinian whānau on this day of solidarity we say, justice is a verb.

Most of our grandparents would be called refugees today, but we chose to immigrate to Aotearoa. On Tuesday 19th, we re-committed to Toitū Te Tiriti because that is the country we came to.

On Friday November 29, we re-commit to act in solidarity with the people of Palestine. As Jews we share responsibility to bring a free, just, safe and self-determining Palestine into being.

The International Criminal Court has issued arrest warrants for the war criminals Netanyahu and Gallant. The International Court of Justice has told us to bring Israel’s illegal occupation to an end as rapidly as possible. The things we knew to be right are now the elements of a court-ordered workplan.

Cease firing. The (illegal) occupier Israel must ~

  • urgently provide and distribute all the essentials of life to Gazan Palestinians including food, water, medicines, fuel.
  • dismantle the (illegal) settlements. Remove the (illegal) settlers.
  • pay reparations for the property it has stolen and damaged.
  • return the refugees to their homes.

Israel’s crimes create obligations for Aotearoa. We must stop normalising genocide and starvation. We must end all economic and diplomatic interactions which aid and enable this illegal status quo.

Arrest the war criminals – at long last. Let the world hear Gazans speak as witnesses and survivors.

In the past fortnight Aotearoa has done the most hopeful, solemn spring planting. Now we commit to grow these seeds. Toitū te Tiriti. Support the court. Ceasefire NOW. Palestine must be free and self-determining.

Justice is a verb. We are here to act for justice with you.

  1. What can be more important than stopping the genocide – and the maiming of civilians, especially children – and doing it YESTERDAY?
